The Mazatepec mushroom variety is steeped in the lore and tradition of the Mazatec peoples who inhabit Mexico's Oaxaca province (southern Mexico). This variety has been used by the indigenous Mazatec for thousands of years in rituals, healing ceremonies, and to communicate with "the gods".

The Mazatepec mushroom strain gained widespread notoriety after R. Gordon Wasson (a banker and mycology enthusiast) visited a famous shaman (Maria Sabina) in the town of Huautla De Jimenez and underwent a life changing experience after taking psilocybe mushrooms administered by Sabina. Wasson wrote about his experience in a famous Life magazine article which is generally regarded as the publication that introduced "magic mushrooms" to western civilization. It is unclear exactly what mushroom variety Maria Sabina actually gave to Mr. Wasson, however it is quite possible that it was the Mazatepec Strain.

Mazatepec is a strong, vigorous, and fast colonizing variety. Its fruits are often long and slender typically growing in dense patches. Its caps range in coloration from pallid brown to tan and its stipes are usually slender, curving, and thick relative to the size of the cap. It is a prolific depositor of spores, which often turn mature mushrooms purple-black. It is resistant to contamination and is one of the easiest mushrooms to grow.
Its effects commonly include visual stimulation and hallucination, strong spiritual feelings, and intense personal insight and revelation. This variety is well suited to use in a medicinal or therapeutic application
