The Hericium coralloides fungus (commonly known as Coral Tooth Mushroom) is a Hericium mushroom found in the wild across North America, Europe, and Asia. Similar to Hericium erinaceus (Lion’s Mane Mushroom), it is being studied for it’s positive effects on neural health and preventing diseases such as Alzheimer’s and dementia.

Coral Tooth mushrooms grow on dead hardwood branches, logs, and stumps, and often grow in large clusters. The fruiting bodies consist of a core that is attached to the wood, and fleshy branches that grow out from the core. The branches bear spines that are long and thin, grow downward, and are white when fresh, resembling icicles.

This mushroom has a flavour that is similar to some types of seafood, including lobster, crab and scallops, and it can be used as a seafood substitute in some dishes!

SPECIES INFORMATION

Natural Habitat: Widely distributed throughout North America and Europe. It is also known to grow in Russia, China, Japan, India, and New Zealand.

Climate: Prefers temperate, warmer climates. Typically found during late summer and early fall, but can be found in the spring in warmer areas.

Preferred Growing Mediums: grows on fallen hardwood branches, logs, and stumps.

Spawn Environment: temperature 77F (25C), 45-45% ambient humidity, low oxygen

Fruiting Environment: warm temperatures, often grow in large clusters
