Golden Teacher Growing Guide: Timeline & Conditions | Spores Lab

That reputation cuts both ways. Because Golden Teacher is forgiving, beginners often assume it's foolproof, and then can't work out why the tub stalled. It isn't foolproof. It's just quicker to tell you when something's wrong.
Here's the timeline, the conditions behind each stage, and the three things that still go wrong.
How long does Golden Teacher take to grow?
Roughly 6 to 8 weeks from inoculation to first harvest. That's fast for a cubensis — Penis Envy will take 8 to 12 under the same conditions.

Ranges, not promises. Grain hydration and spawn ratio will move these numbers more than the strain does.
The conditions Golden Teacher actually needs
Colonization — warm and boring
24–27 °C, dark, sealed. No fresh air exchange, no light, no fussing. Golden Teacher is an aggressive colonizer and the only thing it needs from you at this stage is a stable temperature.
Below 21 °C it slows noticeably. Above 29 °C you start favouring contaminants over mycelium — heat is not an accelerator here, and a warm cupboard next to a hot water tank has ruined more grows than cold rooms have.
Fruiting — cooler, wetter, moving air
Three things change at once when you switch to fruiting:
Temperature drops to 21–24 °C. The drop itself is part of the trigger.
Humidity goes up to 90–95% while pins form, then eases to 85–92% as fruits develop.
Fresh air starts moving. Mycelium exhales CO₂; if it pools, you get long stems, small caps, and fruits that never quite finish.
Golden Teacher tolerates more variance in all three than most strains. That's the whole reason Golden Teacher growing is the beginner recommendation. It is not, however, indifferent to them.
The three things that still go wrong
1. The room is colder than you think
Room temperature is not tub temperature, and a thermometer on the wall is not a thermometer in the substrate. A 19 °C room with a 21 °C reading on the shelf can easily be 18 °C inside a tub sitting on a cold floor.
This is the single most common cause of "my Golden Teacher stalled." It didn't stall — it's cold.
2. Too much fresh air, too early
Beginners over-correct on FAE because they've read about CO₂. Fanning a tub six times a day dries the surface, the pins abort, and you conclude you need more air. You need less air and more patience.
3. Treating "forgiving" as "invincible"
Golden Teacher will survive a mistake that would kill Penis Envy. It will not survive three of them stacked. Forgiveness is a margin, not immunity — and if you're using that margin every grow, you have no margin left when something real goes wrong.
Spores or culture for Golden Teacher?
Worth being straight about this, because the honest answer differs by strain.
Golden Teacher drops spores readily. The veil tears the way a cubensis veil should, prints are easy to take, and spore syringes made from them work. That's genuinely not true of every strain — Penis Envy barely drops spores at all, which is why serious Penis Envy work is done from culture out of necessity rather than preference.
So with Golden Teacher, culture isn't the only route. It's the faster and more predictable one. Spores are a genetic lottery: every syringe is a fresh cross, and you're gambling on which of those genetics you get. A culture is one verified specimen, already growing — which removes the germination stage and takes days off the front of the timeline.
If you want the same Golden Teacher every run, start from culture. If you want to explore variation and don't mind the wait, spores will get you there.
