Turkey Tail is celebrated for its vibrant fan-shaped fruiting bodies and its rich profile of polysaccharopeptides (PSP + PSK) — compounds widely studied for their immune-supportive properties. In cultivation, this strain is adaptable, resilient, and fast-colonizing, making it a favourite for growers who value both beauty and functionality.
Turkey Tail forms thin, fan-shaped caps that grow in overlapping shelves on decaying wood. The caps display distinctive concentric color bands in shades of brown, tan, grey, blue, and white, with a velvety surface. The underside features a light-colored pore layer with very small, tightly packed pores. The flesh is thin and leathery, and the mushroom grows without a true stem, forming dense, layered clusters.

(Turkey Tail is highly adaptable and grows across a wide range of climates.)
Preferred Growing Mediums:
- Spawning: Grain (rye, wheat, millet, sorghum)
- Fruiting: Hardwood sawdust, supplemented hardwood blends, and conifer sawdust (especially hemlock, fir, spruce).
Can be amended with wheat bran, soy hulls, or rice bran for improved yield.
Spawn Environment:
- Temperature: 22–25°C
- Humidity: 85–95% RH
- Notes: Turkey Tail mycelium is dense and fast-spreading across woody substrates.
Fruiting Environment:
- Temperature: 15–21°C (optimal around 18–20°C)
- Humidity: 85–95% RH
- Fresh Air: High FAE required; low CO₂ encourages proper fan-shaped layer formation.
- Light: Indirect light or ambient room light supports strong coloration.
Spores: White to pale cream spore print; spores are smooth, cylindrical to allantoid (sausage-shaped) and produced on multi-spored basidia.
