Psilocybe subtropicalis is a species of mushroom in the family Hymenogastraceae. It is commonly found in Mexico, Guatemala, and other Central American countries. It was described as new to science by mycologist and Psilocybe authority Gastón Guzmán in 1995, and is reported to be a moderate potency species. It often grows alongside Psilocybe Mexicana, a similar looking, but higher potency species, and both of these species have wide distribution throughout Central and Southern America.

Spores Lab acquired our Psilocybe Subtropicalis genetic (in the format of a wild mushroom spore print) in late 2021, through an online genetic trading forum. Since then we have been hard at work since isolating and refining the genetic to prepare it for sale. We are now confident in offering it, and will continue to refine and culture indefinitely.

Spawning Psilocybe Subtropicalis mycelium can be done in a similar fashion to Cubensis (rye, wheat, oat, corn or other grains can be used) however they require the addition of ligneous material (wood) to the substrate in order to fruit. You must add hardwood chips or sawdust to your substrate, but fruiting can be done in the same conditions as p. cubensis (since both are natively subtropical). Typically this species yields less than Cubensis and is quite difficult to cultivate indoors, however has significantly higher potency.

SPECIES INFORMATION

Habitat: Found on soil, in open places of subtropical (mesophytic) forests. Known from Guatemala and Mexico

Climate: Subtropical

Strain Origin: Described as new to science by mycologist and Psilocybe authority Gastón Guzmán in 1995.

Cap: 20-26 mm in diam, subconvex to subcampanulate, subpapillate, sublubricous to dry, glabrous, even to striate toward the margin, reddish brown to brown, hygrophanous, fading to straw colour, staining dark blue to blackish when moist, almost black when dry mainly toward the margin.

Stem: 40-80 x 1-3 mm, cylindric, whitish to concolourous with the pileus, hollow, caerulescent, covered with floccose appressed white fibrils, with a subbulbous hollow base, up to 10 mm in diam in dry, without pseudorhiza. Veil absent in the adult. Context whitish, fleshy in the pileus, subfleshy in the stipe, staining blue when cut.

Gills: adnate or adnexed, pale brown to cinnamon brown or blackish violet, with whitish edges.

Spores: Purplish brown, subellipsoid on 4-spored basidia
